Got A Question

Frequently
Asked Questions

Find clear, straightforward answers to the questions we hear most often about counselling, neurofeedback, fees, insurance, and getting started. Our FAQ section is designed to help you feel informed and confident as you take the next step in your mental wellness journey.

What kind of counsellors work at Sojourn?
We are a team of Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCCs), intern therapists, and mental health professionals who are trained in trauma-informed and evidence-based approaches.
Can I choose my own counsellor?
Absolutely. We encourage you to read through our therapist bios to find a counsellor whose training, approach, and availability best match your needs.
How often should I attend counselling sessions?
Most clients begin with weekly sessions, as this creates consistency and allows meaningful progress to build. Over time, sessions may shift to biweekly or less frequent as you begin to feel more stable and confident.
Your therapist will collaborate with you to find a rhythm that fits your needs, goals, and capacity. Counselling is not one-size-fits-all—your pace will be tailored to you.
How do I know which type of therapy is right for me (e.g., EMDR, CBT, neurofeedback)?
You do not need to have this figured out before you begin. Many people come in unsure of what approach they need, and that is completely okay.
Your therapist will work with you to understand your goals, symptoms, and preferences, and then recommend an approach that fits. For example, EMDR is often helpful for trauma and distressing memories, CBT can support thought patterns and anxiety, and neurofeedback can help regulate the nervous system. Our role is to guide you toward what will be most effective for you.
What happens in the first session?
Your first session is a chance to slow down and be heard. Your therapist will ask about what brings you in, your current challenges, and what you are hoping will change.

You will not be pressured to share more than you are comfortable with. Together, you will begin to clarify goals and discuss a plan for moving forward. Many clients leave their first session feeling a sense of relief, direction, and hope.
Do your counsellors offer virtual appointments?
Yes — most of our counsellors offer secure online counselling across British Columbia.
Do you offer direct billing?
Yes — we now bill directly to many extended health insurance plans through Telus eClaims. If your insurer isn’t included, you can pay at your session and submit your receipt — many plans cover services provided by RCCs and RMFTs. Learn more about direct billing here.
Is counselling covered by insurance in BC?
Most extended health benefit plans in British Columbia cover sessions with a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC). Coverage amounts and limits vary depending on your provider, so we recommend checking your plan details in advance.
At Sojourn Counselling and Neurofeedback, we offer direct billing to many insurance providers for your convenience (a small service fee may apply), or you can pay at the time of your session and submit your receipt for reimbursement. Even if your insurer isn’t one we bill directly, plans that cover Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCCs) or Registered Marriage and Family Therapists (RMFTs) may still reimburse you. While MSP does not typically cover counselling with RCCs, many clients find their extended benefits significantly reduce the cost of care.
What is your cancellation and rescheduling policy?
We ask for at least 48 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment. Changes made within 48 hours are subject to the full session fee.
We understand that unexpected situations can arise, and exceptions may be considered in cases of medical emergencies. Providing advance notice helps us offer your time to another client who may be waiting for support.
