Counselling for Men in Surrey, BC

Many men are used to being the steady one. You handle things. You show up for work, for your family, for everyone who depends on you. Asking for help may not come naturally, and you might not even be sure what you would say if you did. Counselling for men is not about sitting in a room being analyzed. It is a practical, confidential space to figure out what is not working, understand why it keeps happening, and change it.

At Sojourn Counselling and Neurofeedback, we work with men in person at our Cloverdale office in Surrey, BC, and online across British Columbia.

Why Men Often Wait to Reach Out

Most men who come to counselling have been managing on their own for a long time. Many were taught, directly or indirectly, that strength means not needing anyone, that emotions are a distraction, or that talking about problems makes them worse. So stress gets pushed down, and it comes out sideways: irritability, working longer hours, withdrawing from a partner, scrolling late into the night, or one more drink than intended. None of this means something is wrong with you. It usually means you have been carrying more than one person is meant to carry, without a place to set it down.

Common Reasons Men Come to Counselling

  • Irritability or anger that surfaces faster than it used to
  • Feeling flat, numb, or like you are just going through the motions
  • Stress or burnout from work, finances, or being the provider
  • Distance or conflict in your relationship, or a partner who has asked you to get support
  • Becoming a father, or wanting to parent differently than you were parented
  • Grief after a death, a separation, or a major life change
  • Old experiences that still affect how you react under pressure
  • Sleep problems, low motivation, or worry that will not switch off

You do not need to be in crisis to benefit. Many men come simply because they want to feel more like themselves again.

What Counselling for Men Looks Like at Sojourn

Our counsellors work in a way that is direct, respectful, and paced to you. That usually means:

  • Starting with what matters to you. Sessions focus on the problems you actually want solved, whether that is anger, a strained marriage, or stress that will not let up.
  • No forced vulnerability. You decide what to talk about and when. A good counsellor earns trust; they do not demand it.
  • Practical tools alongside deeper work. Many men want both: strategies for managing stress and reactions now, and an understanding of the patterns underneath so they stop repeating.
  • Attention to the body. Stress lives in the nervous system, not just in thoughts. We help you notice the physical signals that come before the blow up or the shutdown.

Anger, Stress, and What Sits Underneath

Anger is one of the most common reasons men seek counselling, and it is rarely the whole story. Anger is often the emotion men have most permission to feel, standing in front of stress, hurt, shame, or exhaustion. Counselling can help you catch your anger earlier, understand what fuels it, and respond in ways you respect afterward, at work, at home, and with your kids.

Relationships and Fatherhood

Many men come to counselling because something in a relationship matters enough to work on: a marriage that has drifted into distance or conflict, co parenting after separation, or wanting to be a more patient, present dad. Individual counselling can help you understand your side of the pattern. When both partners want to work on things together, our couples counselling team uses emotionally focused approaches that look at the cycle between you rather than blaming either partner.

Approaches We Draw From

Depending on your goals, counselling may draw from emotionally focused individual therapy, CBT for practical thought and behaviour change, mindfulness based approaches for stress, and EMDR therapy when past experiences, from childhood or adulthood, still drive present reactions. Men dealing with longstanding stress or focus issues sometimes add neurofeedback, a non invasive brain training approach used to support self regulation, alongside counselling. If anxiety is a main concern, see our anxiety counselling page.

Why Choose Sojourn

Sojourn is a team based clinic of Registered Clinical Counsellors in Cloverdale, Surrey. You choose your counsellor based on their profile, approach, and availability, including evening and weekend options, rather than being assigned to whoever is free. If you would rather not come into an office, online and telephone counselling is available across BC, and many men find video sessions from home or a parked truck at lunch fit their schedule better. For those watching costs, our supervised interns offer low cost counselling at $60 per session, with the first session free. We serve Surrey, Cloverdale, Langley, White Rock, and surrounding communities.

Frequently Asked Questions About Counselling for Men

Do I have to talk about my childhood?

Only if it is relevant to what you want to change, and only when you are ready. Much of the work focuses on present day stress, relationships, and reactions. Sometimes patterns do trace back to earlier experiences, and your counsellor can help you connect those dots at your pace.

Facing what is not working takes more resolve than avoiding it. Most men who come to counselling are high functioning people who have simply been carrying too much for too long without support. Getting clear headed help is a practical decision, not a character flaw.

You can view every counsellor’s profile, background, and availability on our booking site and choose whoever feels like the best fit. Some men prefer a male counsellor; others find they open up more easily with a woman. Either is fine, and fit matters more than gender.

That depends on your goals. Some men come for six to ten focused sessions on a specific problem. Others continue longer when working on deeper patterns. You will review progress with your counsellor as you go, and you can stop at any time.

Yes. What you share stays between you and your counsellor, with narrow legal exceptions your counsellor will explain in the first session, such as risk of serious harm. Nothing goes to your employer, doctor, or partner without your written consent.

Sessions with our Registered Clinical Counsellors are typically $160 to $175 for 50 minutes, and many extended health plans cover RCC and RMFT services; even when we can’t direct bill your insurer, we provide receipts you can submit for reimbursement. Supervised intern sessions are $60, with the first session free.
