NeurOptimal or Linear Neurofeedback: Which Option Fits?

Photorealistic coastal forest path at golden hour, with warm sunlight filtering through tall trees. A winding trail leads toward a calm ocean shoreline, while a stack of smooth, balanced stones rests in the foreground, symbolizing growth, healing, and inner balance.

Sojourn Counselling and Neurofeedback offers two kinds of neurofeedback in Surrey BC: NeurOptimal, a dynamical (nonlinear) brain training system, and linear neurofeedback, a protocol based approach that targets specific patterns of brain activity. This guide explains how each one works, how they differ, what sessions involve, and how to think about which option fits your goals. Both are available in office, and home rental options exist for training between or instead of clinic visits.

What NeurOptimal and Linear Neurofeedback Share

Both approaches are non-invasive forms of brain training. Sensors placed on the scalp and ears read the electrical activity of the brain (EEG) and feed information back to you in real time. Nothing is put into the brain; the sensors only listen. Change happens through learning: as the brain receives timely feedback about its own activity, it can gradually adjust how it responds to stress, stimulation, and rest. With either system, consistency matters more than intensity, and both are used to support self-regulation rather than to diagnose or treat a medical condition.

How NeurOptimal Works

NeurOptimal neurofeedback is called dynamical or nonlinear because it does not push the brain toward a preset target. The system monitors moment to moment shifts in electrical activity and provides feedback, brief pauses in the music you are listening to, at the instant activity is about to change. The brain notices this information and uses it to self-correct in whatever way serves it best. There are no protocols to choose and no diagnosis is required; the same training process is used for everyone, and the individualizing is done by your own brain. Many clients use NeurOptimal to support steadier sleep, focus, stress resilience, and a calmer nervous system over time.

For a deeper explanation of what dynamical feedback is doing, see inside a NeurOptimal session, which covers what the system monitors, the brief pauses in the audio, and what the evidence supports.

How Linear Neurofeedback Works

Linear neurofeedback is the classic, protocol based form of brain training. Rather than following the brain moment to moment, a linear system targets specific frequencies of brain activity at specific scalp locations, rewarding shifts in a chosen direction and discouraging others. Your provider individualizes the protocol to your patterns of brain activity and adjusts it over the course of training as those patterns change. Linear approaches are often chosen by people who want structured, targeted work, for example around attention or arousal patterns, and who like seeing progress measured against a defined goal. Research on protocol based neurofeedback suggests it may support attention and self-regulation for some people, though results vary from person to person.

What About Direct Neurofeedback?

Searching this topic turns up many terms: direct neurofeedback, dynamical neurofeedback, nonlinear neurofeedback, protocol based training, and simply brain training. The term direct neurofeedback usually refers to systems that deliver a very low strength feedback signal to the brain rather than only reading activity. At Sojourn, the two systems we use are NeurOptimal (dynamical, listening only) and linear neurofeedback (protocol based, listening only). If you have read about another system and are curious how it compares, we are happy to talk it through, and the neurofeedback overview page explains the landscape in more detail.

Which Option Fits?

There is no universally better system, only a better fit for your goals, preferences, and season of life.

NeurOptimal® may fit you if you want

  • a gentle, low effort starting point
  • general nervous system support
  • to begin without an assessment
  • a home rental the whole household can use

Linear neurofeedback may fit you if you want

  • a structured, targeted protocol
  • defined progress markers
  • work focused on specific brain patterns
  • an assessment to guide the plan

Some clients try one approach and later switch, and many pair either system with counselling, for example neurofeedback for anxiety alongside anxiety counselling. If you are unsure, our team can help you think through fit before you book.

Cost and Home Options

In office neurofeedback sessions at Sojourn range from $120 to $175 per 50 minute session depending on the provider. Both NeurOptimal and linear systems are available as 30 day home rentals; current rental details and rates are on our home neurofeedback rentals page.

Neurofeedback Alongside Counselling

Neurofeedback is brain training, not a replacement for therapy or medical care. Many clients find the two work well together: as the nervous system becomes more regulated, the work done in counselling or EMDR therapy can feel more accessible. Our counsellors can help you decide whether training, counselling, or a combination fits your goals.

Quick FAQ

What is the main difference between NeurOptimal and linear neurofeedback?
NeurOptimal gives the brain information and lets it self-correct without preset targets; linear neurofeedback trains specific frequencies toward goals set in an individualized protocol.

Is one better than the other?
Neither is universally better. Fit depends on your goals: general regulation and simplicity point toward NeurOptimal, targeted structured training points toward linear.

Do I need an assessment before starting?
NeurOptimal requires no assessment. Linear training begins with an intake process so your provider can individualize the protocol to your brain activity.

Can I do either option at home?
Yes. Both systems are available as 30 day rentals, details are on the home neurofeedback page.

Gentle Next Steps

If you are curious about either option, you can view provider profiles and book online through JaneApp, or contact us at info@sojourncounselling.com if you are unsure where to start. Choosing between NeurOptimal and linear neurofeedback is easier with a short conversation, and there is no pressure to decide before you arrive.
